Attendance and Absence

LessonIf your child cannot to come to school please use our dedicated absence email, stating the name and tutor group of your child as well as the reason for absence, or phone  01962 734361, preferably within school hours.  You should do your best to tell us on the first day that your child is absent.  If you know that your child will be away for a certain number of days, you can tell us this in one message and need not contact us again unless they do not return when expected.  Otherwise, please contact us each day that they are absent.  The office staff check the phone calls, emails and letters each day.

What if I forget to tell school that my child is ill?

Please let us know as soon as possible, otherwise, the absence continues to show as unexplained and we will contact to find out the reason. If you do not reply, the absence remains unauthorised and if it is still unauthorised at the end of the academic year, it becomes a permanent part of their school record. A high rate of unauthorised absence is viewed as matter of concern both by the school and by the colleges to which your child may wish to apply.

My child has a dentist appointment/music exam etc.  What should I do?

Please try to make appointments out of school hours but if this is not possible, write a note to the school office or email absence@perins.hants.sch.uk. The register can be updated in advance.

Can I get permission to take my child on holiday during term time?

Any application for Leave of Absence is considered on an individual basis.  It should be made well in advance and parents are strongly advised to do this before they confirm any holiday arrangements.  The Leave of absence form can be downloaded and should be printed out and returned to the school office.  The school considers the reasons for the request, the effect on the continuity of the child’s learning, and his/her overall attendance. The increased cost of a family holiday during the school holidays is not a valid reason

I need to take my child out of school for another reason.  What should I do?

Occasionally, you may want to ask permission to take your child out of school for an important event or family occasion.  If the standard Leave of Absence form is inappropriate (e.g. for a family funeral) please write a brief letter of explanation to the Headteacher and send this to the School Office by post or by email .  We realise that you may need to ask for permission at very short notice, but please make every effort to contact us in advance.

What if my child misses tutor time because they are at a meeting/music lesson/sports event?

When teachers need to take students out of tutor time, they tell the school office and the school office marks the studetns as present at school.  Sometimes, these activities change at very short notice and students may be marked absent until we can check with the teacher or with a parent.
