Why choose MFL at Perins?

At Perins, students will have been studying either French or Spanish for 2 years Students have the option of continuing with the language they currently study at GCSE level. Studying two languages at GCSE or changing language is only allowed on a case by case basis, following the student having an initial discussion with their class teacher. This is due to the challenging nature of learning a language to GCSE level in 3 years. This is only advisable under exceptional circumstances.

The overwhelming majority of students choose to study a language given its importance in the ever-increasing global market, the communication skills it improves, and its place amongst the 5 “EBacc” subjects.

What do students learn?

The GCSE is studied for the duration of the course, with students following 3 key themes, which are covered broadly once per term and repeated each year with increasing complexity, from the start of Year 9 until completion in Year 11.

The following topics are covered over the course of 3 years:

  1. Identity and culture
  2. Local, national, international and global areas of interest
  3. Current and future study and employment

 

How will my child be assessed?

From 2018, all assessment in Modern Foreign Languages will be done at the end of the course. Students will either sit all their exams at higher tier or all exams at foundation tier.

Listening  – 25%

Speaking 25% – a picture description, a role play followed by general conversation

Reading  – 25%

Writing  – 25%

The writing and reading papers will include translation, both English to Spanish and Spanish to English respectively.

 

Which exam board is used?

AQA is the exam board that the department uses. We have a variety of online resources students can use during the lesson Moodle. We find this an excellent way of helping to prepare student for the demands of the course and the final.  Whilst we use textbooks for structure, we often plan our resources individually to tailor the needs of each class and each student.

Why study a modern language?

The benefits of studying a language are numerous, and include:

  • Developing communication skills
  • Developing cultural understanding
  • Enhancing career and pay prospects
  • Enhancing prospects of attending university
  • Improving literacy skills
  • Increasing the likelihood of travelling abroad and broadening horizons
  • Whilst challenging, accomplishment in a second language is hugely rewarding

With the introduction of the “English Baccalaureate”, a group of 5 subjects (English, Maths, Science, a humanity and a language), it is likely that universities and employers will look to this “gold standard” in terms of GCSE qualifications.
