To celebrate the 200th anniversary of John Keats’ poem ‘To Autumn’, written after walking through Winchester’s Water Meadows, Head of English at Perins School, Mr. Barber, invited several students to collaborate with professional photographer Simon Bray on a project for National Poetry Day.
Using Keats’ ‘To Autumn’ as inspiration, students wrote new poems exploring their understanding of ‘Home’. Simon then ran workshops with the students to inspire a collection of supporting photographs that are presented alongside the students’ work. Each student was given the opportunity to direct a photograph to be shot by Simon, developing links between poetry and photography, by expressing the tone or meaning of their poems. The work can be viewed on the project website here: www.simonbray.co.uk/picturingpoetry
The eight students’ poems and photographs are being displayed at the Picturing Poetry Exhibition at the Winchester Discovery Centre. The exhibition will run until 31st October.
