South Africa Tour 2025
Every two years Year 11 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to participate in the Perins Sports Tour of South Africa. This exciting venture is the end product of two years of training and fundraising for both students and teachers and will create lifelong memories for all.
South Africa is chosen as the country for the tour for several reasons: the vibrancy and enthusiasm of the country’s people appeals, as does its cultural diversity; the students get the opportunity to compete against different schools and colleges while traveling around the country; in addition, the students have the opportunity to interact with the people of South Africa by running sport specific workshops in the Townships. When the students are not competing they have plenty of time to experience the beauty of South Africa, including having the opportunity to try out surfing!
Mr Miller: PE Teacher
Perins took 54 students to South Africa for the first time since 2019 just before the summer break. 8 staff members accompanied them on their journey to experience the culture of the amazing country. Between two rugby teams and two netball teams the players represented the school fantastically with some brilliant team and individual performances. The fixtures were against a mixture of schools from townships to privately educated where our students had the opportunity to see a mixture of culture in a beautiful place. The fixtures themselves were perfectly balanced with some fantastic victories and some exciting narrow defeats. All players brought energy, enthusiasm and passion resulting in smiles on faces no matter the results.
Outside of the fixtures the tour party had an opportunity to experiences some of the other activities the country had to offer. Students in the first few days went to the aquarium down by the V&A waterfront which provided lots of opportunities for dinners out as a tour party but also allowing students to go off in groups and have dinner with friends. Next up was a brilliant day going on a boat trip around Cape bay seeing some Dolphins and Whales. This was followed by Table mountain proving some breathtaking views of Cape town and surrounding areas. The personal highlight was a tour member asking if they could see Brazil in the distance, but was in fact, just clouds. Next up on the activity list was surfing which proved successful for some, however several staff spending more time in the water than on the board! Students had a great time playing tag rugby all together on the beach as part of the warm up, with several surfing coaches wanting to join in!
The tour was fortunate enough to visit a township school Ukhanyo Primary school and Masiphumelele High school. Students visited the school as we donated sports equipment from the fundraising conducted before tour began. Our students ran coaching sessions for the primary school children. It was definitely one of the highlights of the trip for the students and some really eye opening moments. We asked students to comment on their experiences and how it made them feel. It was fantastic to see students interacting and sharing stories and experiences with the students from the schools. The netball teams were brilliant joining in lessons in the primary school, whilst the rugby teams delivered small rugby workshops for the primary students. Following this we competed in the fixtures against the township high school.
''It proved to me how lucky we all are and how many opportunities we really have. They made me want to work harder and make the most of the chances I get. I wish we could improve their living conditions”
“ I have learnt to never take anything for granted. Today has been a privilege and taught me so many things”
“It was nice to see them so happy in their situation, making me want to appreciate every aspect of my life”
“They were always laughing and respectful even with the lack of opportunities and the environment there are in”
The final stop on our tour was the Aquilla game reserve. Students stayed in a luxury reserve with amazing rooms and food. On the first day the students went out on an afternoon game drive. They were fortunate enough to see all of the ‘big 5’. Some brilliant photos were taken by the students going closer than they’ve ever been to the amazing animals. After a long day students had marshmallows stargazing before the final day of tour. To round of the last day of tour, students had one last chance to snap the animals as the sun came up to round up an unforgettable 10 days in South Africa!
Roll on 2027!
