Celebrating VE Day

Last week marked a very special occasion, the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, and our History department went above and beyond to honour it.
Over the past few weeks, our History leaders created quizzes, an information film, and engaging tasks for pupils to complete during tutor times. Highlights included Jack’s "Design Your Own Anderson Shelter" project and heartfelt letters from D-Day veterans Mervyn Kersh (93) and Sgt Hussain (100). Our pupils wrote replies, which will be sent to the veterans and displayed in the History department.
"I cannot thank the History leaders enough for all their hard work in making the week and VE Day so special. It was lovely to see the school come together and for so many staff and pupils getting involved and showing their support for such an important event." - Miss Lewis
Throughout the week, students enjoyed lessons focusing on the importance of VE Day and its celebrations. On the day itself, the school was adorned with bunting and decorations, and we celebrated with a special menu in the canteen featuring Empire biscuits, flag cakes, scones, Victoria Sponge cakes, and of course, fish and chips!
Staff and History leaders dressed up in their 1940s best, with outfits ranging from Land girls to RAF pilots, ARP wardens, and evacuees. It was a fantastic day of celebration and commemoration.
"It's so great that we all took part and commemorated as a school. We loved the presentation we had at tutor time – lots of information and a fun quiz! The canteen looked absolutely fabulous and the cakes were yummy, especially the free bunting cookies!" - Freya and Amelie (History leaders)
